Gemini Mountains is a rural locality in the Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia.[2] In the 2021 census, Gemini Mountains had a population of 65 people.[1]
Geography
[edit]The Goonyella railway line forms most of the western boundary of the locality, with Mount McLaren railway station serving Graincorp's grain handling facility (22°20′50″S 147°45′21″E / 22.3472°S 147.7558°E).[3][4][5]
One of the four segments of the Peak Range National Park is in the south of the locality.[4][6]
The locality contains the following mountains:
- Fletchers Awl (22°30′43″S 147°54′39″E / 22.5119°S 147.9107°E) 530 metres (1,740 ft)[7][8]
- Mount Castor (22°27′53″S 147°52′45″E / 22.4648°S 147.8793°E) 568 metres (1,864 ft)[7][9]
- Mount Commissioner (22°28′56″S 147°53′28″E / 22.4823°S 147.8910°E) 490 metres (1,610 ft)[7][10]
- Mount Mclaren (22°21′24″S 147°47′19″E / 22.3568°S 147.7887°E) 466 metres (1,529 ft)[7][11]
- Mount Pollux (22°28′27″S 147°52′34″E / 22.4743°S 147.8761°E) 678 metres (2,224 ft)[7][12]
- Mount Saddleback (22°29′33″S 147°54′29″E / 22.4925°S 147.9080°E) 550 metres (1,800 ft)[7][13]
- Red Riding Hood (22°29′09″S 147°57′51″E / 22.4858°S 147.9641°E) 530 metres (1,740 ft)[7][14]
The land use is predominantly crop growing with some grazing on native vegetation.[4]
History
[edit]The locality takes its name from the mountain range Gemini Mountains (22°28′00″S 147°53′00″E / 22.4666°S 147.8833°E), which consists of two volcanic peaks, Mount Castor and Mount Pollux. Castor and Pollux were the Gemini twins in Greek and Roman mythology.[15][6]

In the 2021 census, Gemini Mountains had a population of 65 people.[1]
